Turkish food in Manchester: where to eat, by neighbourhood

The Curry Mile is South Asian by reputation, but the stretch of Wilmslow Road through Rusholme and into Fallowfield has quietly become Manchester's Turkish grill corridor, with a handful of ocakbaşı-style restaurants and late-night doner counters serving the student population. It is the place for a cheap mixed grill after ten at night. Quality varies more than in North London; look for the charcoal grill and the house-made spit.

The city centre has the newer, more polished Turkish restaurants: meze-led places aimed at the after-work trade, a couple of Anatolian grills, and the city's better Turkish breakfast options. Prices are higher and the rooms are designed rather than functional. This is where to take someone who has not eaten Turkish food before.

The family restaurants are in the suburbs. Didsbury and Chorlton each have one or two long-running Turkish restaurants with regular local trade and weekend breakfast queues, and they are the most reliable kitchens in the city.
